Description:
On Saturday, October 4, 2014, the Susquehanna Valley Visitors Center will host the 26th Annual Rt. 462 Veterans Memorial Bridge Bust. The 2-lane span bridge will be closed to traffic for this event. The bridge is between Columbia in Lancaster County and Wrightsville in York County. The 1.25 mile bridge will have over 300 vendors who will offer their craft items and art work for sale ranging from home or country décor to gardening or specialty ideas. Food is available with offerings such as blooming onions, crab cakes, pulled pork, wraps and other food to please taste buds. This popular event which attracts over 20,000 persons every year will be held rain or shine.
The 5,183 foot long bridge is a reinforced concrete arch bridge that carries Rt. 462 traffic over the Susquehanna River. In 1929 construction was begun and finished a year later. It is believed to be the longest concrete arch bridge in the world. Up until 1943, cars crossing the four hundred twenty-five million pound bridge paid a 25 cent toll.
From the Author: This is a fabulous outdoor Fall event to walk the bridge, normally closed to pedestrians, and also to buy some great homemade crafts -- or to get ideas for the do-it-yourself person. This is something you need to add to your bucket list of things to do.
