Description:
This is the always anticipated performance of “The Nutcracker” by the Ann Arbor Ballet Theater company at the Power Center. About 100 dancers bring this ballet to life, and include children and adults. Many of the adults have been dancing in the production since they were children.
This beautiful ballet tells the tale of Clara, the young girl who is transported to a fairyland by a magical nutcracker, based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The music by Tchaikovsky and the dancers provide a memorable experience for the audience each year. There are 4 performances this year; December 13 at 8 PM, December 14 at 2 PM and 8 PM and December 15 at 2 PM at the Power Center for the Performing Arts on the University of Michigan campus.
This is a premier state-of-the-art theater, that can accommodate grand operas and sweeping dramas. Opened in 1971, the interior was designed by Jo Mielziner, who also worked in the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. The unique building combines massive concrete columns and mirrored glass with ancient forms. There is a parking structure adjacent to the theater, and another parking structure 1 block away, plus on-street parking. It is also withing walking distance to State Street and South University where there are restaurants and pubs open before and after the performance.
From the Author: I have seen this performance many times and always enjoy it. The Power Center seating is set in a steep "bowl" like configuration, so that every seat has a great view of the stage. The architecture is also very interesting. Don't miss it.
