Description:

From May 1st through May 31st, 2014, Blairsden, 17th in the “Mansion in May” series, will be open to the public. The signature fundraiser of the Women’s Association of Morristown (NJ) Medical Center, the series has attracted thousands of visitors and raised millions of dollars to support the hospital’s programs.

Every two years since 1974 some of the most elegant estates in New Jersey’s Morris and Somerset Counties have been transformed into spectacular showcases. The work of more than 60 area interior and landscape designers will be featured this year at Blairsden, the 500-acre country estate of financier, C Ledyard Blair. Built between 1897 and 1903, Blairsden was designed by the same architectural firm, Carrere and Hastings, who designed the New York Public Library and the Frick Mansion as well as other iconic residential and commercial buildings.

A mile-long drive leads to the 62,000 square foot mansion, which is one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the United States. More than 20 acres of formally landscaped gardens surround the house and include summer pavilions, reflecting pools and extensive waterworks.

Tickets can be purchased either online or at the door. Advance tickets (before May first) are $40 per person. From May 1-31, tickets are $50. Access to Blairsden is provided by free shuttle from the off-site parking. There is no parking at the mansion and no access by foot.

From the Author: Tours through the mansion are conducted by volunteer docents. Two years ago when I toured Glenallyn, I found the fabrics, wood and other textures irresistible, so I touched them. I received three reprimands within 10 minutes. My best advice - don't touch, as tempting as it may be.
