Description:
Back in the 1700’s, When we were still quite young, grand illuminations were a huge part of the colonial celebration and were used at such times as when a military battle was won or at the appearance of a incoming Colonial Governor. The events often included fireworks and the firing of guns both large and small.
Every year on the first full weekend in December, Colonial Williamsburg puts on a spectacular “Grand Illumination” This year will be the 79th such illumination. It is also based, although somewhat loosely, on the English and Colonial custom where candles were left burning in the windows to celebrate a special occasion.
Join the folks of Williamsburg for this amazing weekend viewing all the colonial Christmas decorations and listening to carolers on the street corners while you warm your hands over a cauldron fire. On Sunday the 7th you will be able to listen to musical performances from multiple stages and enjoy the spectacular fireworks from 3 separate locations all to be seen from the governors square.
The fireworks are free although somethings will require a ticket 4:45 pm – 7:30 pm
From the Author: We have been going to the grand Illumination for years, some families have made this a yearly tradition. Make sure to go early to enjoy all they have to offer.
