What is Chautauqua? The original Chautauqua was organized on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York state. The Chautauqua Institution was founded in 1974, and was primarily a summer school for Sunday School teachers, but it quickly became much more. Tent Chautauquas became Circuit Chautauquas that brought educational programs to the rest of the country. Today there is a Chautauqua Trail, which ties together the various local Chautauquas presented each year. Chautauqua at the Riverside is part of this organization.
Why would you want to go today? The local presentations are organized around the four traditional pillars of a Chautauqua: arts, education, recreation, and religion. Exhibitions in both the downstairs Gallery and the theater lobby will be open for viewing. The “Riverside” part of the name comes from the location of the event at the Riverside Arts center, and is now organized through the Ypsilanti Historical Society. The 45-minute presentations begin at 10 AM and end at 9 PM. Paul Klinger’s East Street Band will entertain from 6 PM playing traditional Jazz and Dixieland music, with a cash bar and light refreshments in the lobby. From the Author: This was originally founded by local resident and educator Tom Dodd as part of the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival in 2012. The program topics are all about local people and places of historical significance. There are parking lots, restaurants and shops conveniently located nearby.
