Description:
The brainchild of the organizer of one of Fairbanks most popular events of the winter, the Ice Alaska International Ice Sculpture competition, brings the talent of China and the US together to present a new take on sculpture: sand. Using the simple media of sand by a gravel pit on the same property that houses the ice art park in winter, this new event shows just how creative the artists can be. You’ll find architecture, animals, and fanciful creatures sculpted for viewing.
One intricate display included spiders and caterpillars, artfully crafted amidst leaves and flowers; another has two walruses outside an igloo gazing up at the sky as though viewing the aurora borealis; and of course, the proverbial castles in the sand. If you’re coming with children, a sand and pool area is available. You will always find helpful and friendly staff to help answer questions about the park itself and its continued expansion. Stop by the park off the Johansen and enjoy the detail and design.
