Description:
The Amish Village offers “English” visitors (that’s how the Amish refer to anyone who’s NOT Amish) an opportunity to go on a guided tour a typical Amish farmhouse and walk around the 12 acre grounds to see a one-room school house, black smith’s shop, gift shop, barn with typical Amish farm equipment and more.
The Amish Village is open Monday – Saturday from 9am-5pm and Sunday from : 10am-5pm. Bus tours (WORTH DOING!) are conducted daily from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the hour. Check the website for winter hours as, they’re scaled back in the off-season.
One of the nice touches at the Amish Village is that they hire Amish people to work at the site, including a former Amish school teacher (Levinia) who works in the school house. They also have staff who help tend the grounds and conduct tours.
The bus tour the Amish Village offers is a great way to see Lancaster’s Dutch Country since you can cover a lot of ground, it’s easy to hear the bus driver’s descriptions over the PA system, the seating is comfortable and most importantly, you have heat or air conditioning!!
Worth keeping in mind is that this IS a tourist attraction and is simply representative of the Amish lifestyle. For people who would rather “see” than “read”, it’s a great way to get a sense of the Amish culture. The staff are knowledgeable and happy to answer your questions.
