Description:
The historical society in Lewiston was conceived and born in 1973. Situated in what once had been the old Baptist Church, it has had a number of changes over the years. What once had the appearance and clutter of Grandma’s attic is now an easy to navigate room still filled with memorabilia from local families but also includes dioramas, maps, scale model replicas and a number of interactive stations depicting the local history.
Lewiston has a colorful past, including participation in the underground railroad, the war of 1812, the portage of goods from the Atlantic Ocean up the St Lawrence Seaway and throughout the Great Lakes region. Presidents have visited here, great authors have based plays and stories in Lewiston and the Falls themselves were once in Lewiston!
If you’ve a mind to take a walking tour of the village and would like to hear about the history of various buildings, borrow a hand held device and map for your private, at your own pace, guided tour.
There are many knowledgeable authors still in Lewiston and their works can be purchased in the gift shop along with post cards, note cards, ornaments made especially for the museum, children’s games and mugs. There is a docent present to answer your questions and give directions to any of the historic sites you just learned about and now wish to experience first hand.
