Sandwich, Massachusetts reaches a historic milestone in 2014 and a year-long celebration is planned. The oldest town on Cape Cod was incorporated in 1639 and is now 375 years old. Events have been planned that showcase the rich culture and pristine beauty of this quaint seaside town. There will be art exhibits, musical events, theatrical events, historical re-enactments, a clambake, and so much more.
The Town of Sandwich was named for the seaport of Sandwich, England. Agriculture and fishing sustained the town in the early years as did the timber from the area, which was exported to England. The town survived the American Revolution and would, in the early 1800’s, evolve from an agrarian community to one in which the glass industry would take hold.
Deming Jarves chose Sandwich for the location of his Boston & Sandwich Glass Company because of the availability of timber to fuel the glass furnaces, a shallow harbor, and salt marsh grass that could be used as packing materials. The town thrived and changed from a quiet, bucolic town to one of great importance in the glass industry. As glass blowers and workers were brought in from Ireland and England, an entire community grew up around the factory. Throughout the 1800’s the glass industry would continue to evolve, as would the town.
Although the glass factory in Sandwich closed in the early 1900’s, Sandwich glass remains today some of the most collectable and highly valued in the world. The Sandwich Glass Museum is chronicler of this important time in the towns’ history and is a ‘must see’ when visiting Cape Cod.
Events planned to celebrate the 375 years of this historic and beautiful town include a concert by internationally famed Irish Tenor Ronan Tynan on April 27th, “Heritage Days” on June 14th & 15th, “SeaFest” on July 26th, and the “Water Street Wing Fling” on August 2nd & 3rd. On September 13th the 375th Anniversary will be celebrated with a “Grand Parade” touting the towns’ history and culture.
