Description:
The longest sled dog race in the lower forth-eight states will begin on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Named after a famous mail carrier, John Beargrease, the race began in 1980. World-class mushers compete along with their strong dogs to finish the race which is a qualifier for the Iditarod race that takes place in Alaska.
This year the start of the race will take place in the gravel pit off Highway 2 and 8.5 miles from Highway 61 in Two Harbors, Minnesota. You will have the opportunity to meet the mushers and their teams of sled dogs along with sponsors on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will also be sled dog marathon merchandise to purchase during those two hours. The race begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The race follows the C.J. Ramstad Snowmobile Trail up the North Shore to Grand Portage and then returns to Duluth. Race checkpoints include Finland, Sawbill, Caribou, Skyport in Grand Marais, and the Trail Center Checkpoint for a mid distance race. You can follow the race at the Beargrease website and there are many opportunities to volunteer and support this great annual event.
The mushers are scheduled to finish the race sometime February 2, 2017. The weather is always a factor in the race and after this recent January thaw, Mother Nature needs to bring some snow and cold temperatures to get the trail in perfect shape for the mushers. Adults and children will enjoy this exciting start to the race, but family pets are not allowed at this event. Only service dogs will be permitted near the race. Be a part of history on the North Shore and enjoy the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon!
