The first collected edition of William Shakespeare’s plays–best known as the First Folio–will be on display in Duluth Minnesota at the Tweed Museum of Art during October 2016. The First Folio was published in 1623 and that was seven years after William Shakespeare died. The collection is eighteen plays and include Macbeth, Twelfth Night, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and The Tempest. The Shakespeare Folio comes from the Folger Shakespeare Library on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The founders Henry Clay Folger and his wife Emily Jordan Folger both loved the works of William Shakespeare and worked for years and years to gather the largest collection of Shakespeare works in the world.

Folios are huge books that are created by folding printed pages in half to create two double-sides per sheet. Folios were usually made for Bibles, early history and science facts. This First Folio is the earliest folio containing only plays and only Shakespeare plays!

This tour is making a stop in all the fifty states and Puerto Rico. Those of us who live in Duluth Minnesota are thrilled to be host to this one-of-a-kind display. The beautiful Tweed Museum is located on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth. The hours for the museum are Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit is free and there is no need to make reservations and tickets are not needed.
