The Duluth Community Garden Program was organized by a group of gardeners to strengthen the Duluth community, to encourage self-sufficiency among people living in Duluth, to provide access to food production and to promote sustainable gardening practices. The Master Gardeners who organized the program maintain over 17 sites throughout the city and the garden program offers over two hundred 20×20 plots for Duluth folks to garden flowers and food.
The Duluth Community Garden Program is holding their annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The sale this year takes place at Holy Family Catholic Church which is located at 2430 West 3rd Street in West Duluth. You will be able to purchase perennial plants at this annual sale. The proceeds of the sale support the Community Garden Program and you will have the opportunity to become a member. The sale is open to members only from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015. The sale will be held rain or shine!
The Duluth Community Garden Program website offers planting guides, details of their tree and scrub sale, a seed list, information on gardening classes, delicious recipes, a blog, information on composting and informational newsletters. This year the Garden Program is encouraging people in Duluth to plant potatoes in their gardens–the vegetable of the year!
From the Author: We have hosted the Oregon Creek Garden Club at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast for their monthly meetings. They are just one of the community garden groups that maintain beautiful gardens through our city on Lake Superior. Most of the members are Master Gardeners and are very willing to share their expertise of growing beautiful flowers and food.
