Description:
St. Louis Cathedral is the iconic postcard image of New Orleans. The stately spires rising over the cobblestone plaza and the statue of Andrew Jackson in Jackson Square have inspired artists and created memories for visitors and residents alike for two hundred years. It’s the backdrop to a bustling scene of tourists and locals enjoying a respite from shopping, or maybe taking selfies in front of it, but it’s more than that.
The Cathedral is the oldest continuously active Roman Catholic basilica in North America, but you will feel that you’re in Europe, and back in an earlier, more peaceful time, when you walk into the majestic church. During the month of December, French Quarter Festivals, Inc. sponsors Christmas New Orleans Style, putting on a series of concerts in the Cathedral that play on the beautiful acoustics and the awe-inspiring space to create a spiritual experience.
The lineup of concerts includes New Orleans’ finest musicians and crosses all genres: traditional trumpeter Leroy Jones, jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, classical harpist Rachel Voorhees, avant-garde cellist Helen Gillet, gospel choir Shades of Praise, and many more. The last concert is December 21, with the St. Louis Basicilica choir. Hearing “Oh Holy Night” in that setting will get you in the Christmas spirit! The concerts are free, but the ambiance is priceless.
