Description:
Celebration in the Oaks, November 28-January 3, 2015, makes the most of our wonderfully mild New Orleans winter weather. Add in the City Park landscape of ancient oak trees, atmospheric hanging moss and lagoons, and you’ve got the perfect setting for a New Orleans version of Winter Wonderland. Something about those hundreds of thousands of glittering white lights on a magical winter night can get anyone into the holiday spirit.
25 acres of City Park, including Storyland, the Botanical Gardens, and Carousel Gardens, get the full holiday treatment, decked out with the “Who Dat” Christmas tree and our beloved snowman Mr. Bingle. The train choo-choos its way through it all.
Celebration in the Oaks is a family tradition for New Orleanians and a must-do for visitors. It’s right up there with a visit to the lobby of the Fairmont (now Roosevelt) Hotel to view the decorations! We may not have skating at Rockefeller Center or ski slopes in Vail to conjure up the perfect “White Christmas”, but we think the animated “Cajun Night Before Christmas” display more than makes up for the lack of that overrated snow.
Grab a kid or two, or your best pals, and make Celebration in the Oaks a destination this season. It will make you feel like a kid yourself, excited at the vision of all those lights on a dark winter night. Especially if you mount a pony on the historic Carousel, or get on the train!
From the Author: This is truly an event that one can visit year after year. I look forward to standing under the oak tree that is dressed in 40,000 twinkling lights. One can not help but feel the joy of the holidays.
