The Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival, held on Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9th in Armstrong Park, has been satisfying curious palates for several years here with its various versions of gumbo offered, including vegan.  It’s not just about food, though, but about the music that arose from the Tremé neighborhood and Congo Square, now the home of Armstrong Park, and still fills the air in Tremé joints like Candlelight Lounge on N. Robertson Street. Its brass bands, and the best in town will be playing at Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival–Soul Rebels Brass Band, Shamar Allen and the Underdogs, Brass-A-Holics, Pinettes Brass Band, and of course, Tremé Brass Band. The neighborhood may have become more famous since the HBO television show “Treme,’” but it’s historically significant as one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country settled by African-Americans and free persons of color.  The Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival is a terrific way to experience the spirituality, the joy, and the feel of this unusual neighborhood. Please bring the kids, and shop at the Arts Market—there’s a Kids Area, and they can attend one of the interactive workshops local artists are conducting this year too. Shopping, playing, eating, and listening to music, all in one of New Orleans’ most historic districts. Come on Down in the Tremé, as they sing on the HBO show!
