Description:
Over 8600 acres of forest, views, trails and a fire tower! This is Doe Mountain which runs down the heart of Johnson County, TN. Previously a wildlife management area with hunting, it is becoming an outdoor lovers paradise with mountain bike trails, hiking trails (various levels), ATV trails and soon, horseback riding trails.
A dedicated group of volunteers is working to fit all the different trail using groups onto the mountain with safety and cooperation. The mountain is managed by a 15 member board from many different points of view, but working to get the first recreational area complex in Tennessee to be a model for others to come.
Permits are required and may be purchased at Iron Mountain Inn B&B in Butler, Mountain City Cycle in Mountain City, TN or at the Visitor’s Center on the mountain when it is open. Check their website for summer hours.
ETSU students are mapping the location of endangered and unique specials of plants and animals – users are encouraged to ask questions when they see a student working on the mountain.
From the Author: This is a great place to hike, bike and generally "get away from it all". Lots of B&Bs, vacation rentals and other lodging to make a true outdoor vacation location. Tired of hiking? Drop down off the mountain and into Watauga Lake off Sink Valley entrance.
