Description:
This year’s International Bonspiel occurs April 3-6th, and is a great time to introduce yourself to the sport. Unique to northern climates, curling can be likened to a huge refrigerated shuffleboard, with a very heavy rock or stone that is guided down a sheet of ice, assisted by players who work hard to ensure its delivery toward the goal.
A great way to meet friends and socialize with the locals, this sport has been encouraging players of all ages to learn this skill and compete nationally and internationally. It’s a low impact sport, but does allow people of all ages to participate, from 5 to 85! The players slide and sweep a large granite “rock” with a handle down a sheet of ice to reach the circle goals. The indoor playing field resembles bowling lanes.
The Fairbanks crowd offers a very welcoming, supportive group of people that will help you learn. For your relaxation while you watch from behind a warm glassed in seating area, you can partake of adult beverages. In addition, you will frequently find dinners offered at a very low cost. To sweeten that up even more, proceeds are donated around town for various needs as well.
