Description:
Lancaster County is known for their fire company “mud sales” – so named because the parking fields and areas around the sale grounds are usually muddy from snow or the ground thawing out from the winter. These sales are organized by local volunteer fire departments as a way of raising funds for their companies. Many of the volunteer firemen are Amish men and their folk heartily support these fundraising efforts by their contributions.
These sales are huge events with folks coming from near and far for bargains and the fast paced excitement of an auction. Several auctioneers are auctioning simultaneously where you can hope for a bargain as they sell anything from Amish quilts to potholders, locally made crafts to antiques, lumber to buggies, or lawn equipment to shrubbery. And don’t forget to indulge in the sampling of traditional fare unique to Lancaster County – the donuts, sticky buns, and whoopee pies. A staple at most of the auctions is the Pa Dutch chicken corn soup.
This is a great experience to see the mesh of cultures (Amish and English) or the modern and traditional. Come and spend the day and enjoy the sense of community and friendship amongst the attendees.
