Description:
The original Rose Garden opened in 1965 with 2,000 roses and remained for 25 years winning many awards and enjoyed by Duluth residents and visitors. In 1994 a redevelopment project forced the rose garden to move and the beautiful six acre garden is now situated over the expressway that travels through Duluth Minnesota.
The rose garden is planted over seven feet of soil that rests on the freeway tunnel. Being as the garden is so close to Lake Superior, the “lake effect” has proven to lower the fungal disease often suffered by roses. Over 3,000 roses and 12,000 non-rose plantings now occupy the beautiful gardens along with fountains, a gazebo, benches, grassy areas and brick walkways. A peony garden, a herb garden, gracious day lilies, healthy evergreen shrubs, and multi-colored mixed perennials make this garden so very beautiful.
The City of Duluth operates the Rose Garden along with the Lake Superior Rose Society. The gardens are meticulously manicured through the summer months and the annual tipping of the roses takes place late fall. Most weekends in the summer you can view a wedding or two taking place on this breathtaking site. The view of the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge and Lake Superior complete the perfect setting.
From the Author: A favorite story we love to tell is about the contest the Rose Garden held and folks were asked to "pick" their favorite rose in the garden. The contest was abruptly stopped when rose lovers were actually cutting their favorite rose.
